Kodo millets can be substituted for rice and wheat.It has high protein content (11%), low fat (4.2%) and very high fibre content (14.3%).Kodo millets are rich in B vitamins, especially niacin, B6 and folic acid, as well as the minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and zinc.

It can also be made into a payasam or kheer, a kind of wet pudding. As a versatile millet it can be ground into flour and used to make many dishes such as dli, dosa, pongal, khichdi, snacks, porridge, biscuits and noodles.
